Posted over 8 years ago by Denise Souza

Dear ANHE Nurses - You're invited - On Wednesday, May 10th at 3 PM, Environment America is pleased to host a webinar for doctors, nurses, and other health professionals with The Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments and Physicians for Social Responsibility Philadelphia to discuss fracking and public health and ways the health community can engage on the issue.

Fracking is a public health disaster.

The chemicals used in fracking include known carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and reprotoxic agents. The list of health problems associated with fracking ranges from headaches and nosebleeds to cancer and asthma. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University found Pennsylvania residents who lived near fracking wells faced significantly higher hospitalization rates, and another study found fracking linked to higher rates of birth complications.

Despite the negative health impacts associated with fracking, the drilling practice is largely unregulated at the federal level and state regulations are inadequate to fully address its harms.

Given the current administration’s anti-environment policies, how can we make any progress in the fight against fracking? This webinar will address ways to get involved locally to protect those impacted by fracking’s harms as well as share past successes where health professionals have played pivotal roles and tactics for making a difference.
