We are saddened to share the news that professor emerita Barbara Resnik, who founded the UCSF program for adult nurse practitioners and the specialty for occupational and environmental health nursing, died in late December. She was 95.
Barbara was a nursing pioneer whose work and advocacy advanced the profession. In the late 1960s, she co-authored two important papers in the New England Journal of Medicine with physician colleague Chuck Lewis on the expanding role of registered nurses in the outpatient clinic setting.
She began her long tenure at UCSF in 1969 and held dual appointments in the School of Medicine and School of Nursing. In 1974, she launched a continuing-education adult nurse practitioner program, which expanded to the Core Pathway Program – an academic program offering a Master of Science degree in 1978. The Core Pathway Program set the foundation for the development of further specialties, notably the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing specialties.
