Subject: New CDC Elastomeric Respirator Use Guidance

The CDC has posted guidance for the use of reusable elastomeric particulate respirators to provide respiratory protection to healthcare practitioners (HCP) against pathogens as a component of a formally developed and implemented written respiratory protection program.

A webinar is also available on this page to provide an overview of respiratory protection and guidance surrounding supply shortages as well as information on infection prevention measures, strategies for optimizing the supply of N95 respirators, and a broad overview of the use of elastomeric respirators in healthcare.

To access this information, see the Elastomeric Respirators: Strategies During Conventional and Surge Demand Situations webpage.

CDC previously released guidance on Strategies to Optimize the Supply of PPE that highlights some of the steps facilities can take in the event of an acute shortage of supply. These new guidance documents describe considerations for the use of alternatives to N95 respirators. CDC developed this new guidance to assist respiratory protection program managers, health officials, and other program leaders responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures to prevent pathogen transmission, including those developed to prevent the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.
