UPDATE 10/2/17:

Fieldwork: mitigating researcher risk in an uncontrolled environment

Join us for a one-hour picnic table discussion regarding field research medicine, including recommendations for PPE, surveillance, and first aid, followed by a 2-3 hour docent-led hike through the Jasper Ridge biological preserve.

  • We will meet at 9 am at Stanford Hills Park (https://goo.gl/maps/eNoTnVsoF6s) located on Branner Dr. off Sand Hill Rd. in Menlo Park.
  • Note: If you want to stop for coffee or breakfast prior to (or as a takeaway for) our meeting Starbucks, Safeway, and Woodside Bakery are at the nearby Sharon Heights shopping center: 325 Sharon Park Dr, Menlo Park, CA, 94025.
  • At 10 am we will drive/carpool from Stanford Hills Park to Jasper Ridge where we will meet with our docents at 10:30.
  • The address for Jasper Ridge is 4001 Sand Hill Rd, Woodside, CA

A few rules from the folks at Jasper Ridge:

  • The docents can only take 8 people each, so there is a limit of 16 people for this event.
  • Wear closed toed shoes and long pants.
  • Bring only reusable water bottles. No single-use plastic bottles.

Other considerations:

  • You may want to consider insect avoidance as we will be in a woodsy area.
  • A hat and or sunglasses might make things more comfortable if it is sunny.
  • We will be walking on unpaved, sometimes narrow, trails, with some hills and uneven footing.

 END OF UPDATE 10/2/17

Join us for a walk/hike and classroom presentation at Jasper Ridge Biological Reserve. Visit their website to learn about the Reserve

Contributing to the understanding of the Earth's natural systems through research, education, and protection of the preserve's resources

Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve (JRBP) is located near Stanford University's campus in the eastern foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The preserve encompasses remarkable geologic, topographic, and biotic diversity within its 485 hectares (1198 acres) and provides a natural laboratory for researchers from all over the world, educational experiences to students and docent-led visitors, and refuge to native plants and animals.

The careful management of the preserve's ecosystems in as natural a state as possible allows scientists to quantify changes observed in similar ecosystems affected by a range of human impacts. In addition to facilitating first-rate research, this highly accessible field station provides undergraduate educational experiences and plays an active role in educating the general public.
